Saylor Announces $35,000 Grants for York County Schools
1/18/2019
RED LION- Rep. Stan Saylor (R-York) announced that the Red Lion Area School District, the Dallastown Area School District, the Eastern York School District and the York Academy will each receive a $35,000 grant to expand computer science classes and teacher training.

The funding was made available from the PA Smart Initiative that was included in the state budget that was passed in June of 2018. The goal of these targeted grants is to meet the needs of schools that currently have limited to no computer science offerings. These grants are meant to fund teams of educators (four or more) who would like to be trained on ways to implement computer science in their classrooms.

“The changes we see in our workforce are being driven by constantly evolving technology. In order to better prepare our children to meet the needs of tomorrow it is essential that they have some background in computer science. That is why I was proud to fight for the inclusion of these funds in the budget,” Saylor said. “The job of our schools is to prepare our students to be successful in life, and in today’s world that means knowing how to interact with new technology in our professional and everyday lives. These grants will help our schools to give our children a stronger and more well-rounded education.”

The funding available for these grants is the result of a $30 million appropriation in the Fiscal Year 2018-19 General Fund Budget. The Pennsylvania Workforce Development Board provided recommendations and approved the framework for the funding priorities.
