Saylor Announces Wildfire Equipment and Training Grant for Felton’s Union Fire Co.
10/10/2018
HARRISBURG – Rep. Stan Saylor (R-York) announced today that Union Volunteer Fire Co. in Felton has been awarded $8,388 in grant money strategically directed at local firefighting forces in communities with fewer than 10,000 residents.

“Southern York County remains a treasure of farmland and forests, and our rural first responders need all the assistance we can provide so they can protect property and prevent the spread of wildfires as they are the first line of defense,” Saylor said. “Each year we continue to see the loss of life, property and majestic forests in the western United States due to wildfires. We must equip our firefighters to be prepared to deal with these situations.”

The funding is specifically for training and equipment purchases directly related to fighting brush and forest fires. Accordingly, grants may be used for purchasing mobile or portable radios; installing water supply equipment; wildfire prevention and mitigation work; training wildfire fighters; or converting and maintaining federal excess vehicles.

“These grants also coincide with National Fire Protection Week, which runs from Oct. 9 through Oct. 13,” Saylor said. “Each year we commemorate the week of Oct. 9 in remembrance of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on Oct. 8, 1871, and killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres of land.”

The grant program, offered through DCNR and paid through federal grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service, has awarded more than $12.5 million since it began in 1982.

The maximum grant awarded any fire company in 2018 was $10,000.
