Saylor, Gillespie Announce $298,000 for Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Services
HARRISBURG – Twenty-seven volunteer fire and ambulance associations in the 47th and 94th Legislative districts will receive more than $298,000 in state grant funding, thanks to a program dedicated to assisting first responders in Pennsylvania, said Reps. Stan Saylor (R-Windsor) and Keith Gillespie (R-Hellam).

“The majority of Americans, and even more Pennsylvanians, depend upon volunteers for fire protection and basic emergency response services,” Saylor said. “Nationwide, 71 percent of our fire departments consist of volunteers, and in Pennsylvania that number is 97 percent. Our volunteers are literally the backbone of our communities, and York County volunteers are the finest I have ever seen. This grant program is just one way in which we can assist their efforts to keep us safe.

Gillespie has 32 years of experience in the health care field. In 1972, he became one of the first certified paramedics in Pennsylvania, and later served with the first full-service medic unit in York County.
“Our emergency responders are there for us in the dead of winter and the heat of summer, no matter the time of day,” Gillespie said. “They are in it for the good of their community and not for money or fame, often being called away from their families to help a neighbor in need.”
