– Rep. Stan Saylor (R-York) announced today that the York County Libraries’ effort to improve and modernize its facilities will get a $2 million boost in the form of a grant from the state’s Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP).
“As a strong supporter of our libraries, I am pleased to announce that the state has approved our request for funds to continue the improvements at the Kaltreider-Benfer Library in Red Lion to accommodate the increased usage the library is experiencing with an expansion space for the children's library to accommodate growing use and to establish a dedicated teen center and area for private study and silent reading,” Saylor said. “The design includes riser seating and nooks and crannies to spark imaginations. The library will expand to 14,000 square feet and have a teen center geared toward their needs.”
These funds will also assist the renovation efforts at the Martin and Kreutz Creek libraries. The Martin renovations will include an open space for the community to meet, an expanded teen area with digital media labs and a place for hands-on learning for children. The Kreutz Creek Library will be moving out of a FEMA trailer into the Hellam Township building. The township will be constructing a new municipal building, and officials donated the current municipal building for the library. The new library facility will include more computers and a new space to accommodate children, teens, adult and senior users
“Outside of schools, brick-and-mortar libraries serve as the educational system,” Saylor said. “They are not just a place to read, but also to find a job or fill out a resume. The libraries are the foundation of our communities. In fact, last year our libraries had 1.5 million annual visits. That's more than the Appell Center, DreamWrights, the York Fair, the baseball stadium and the county parks combined.”
The Kaltreider-Benfer Library is located at 147 S. Charles St., Red Lion
, the Kreutz Creek Library is located at 66 Walnut Springs Road in Hellam Township
, and the Martin Library is located at 159 E. Market St. in York City
. The York County Library System has a total of 13 public libraries.
